Three Opposition Parties Agree To Join Forces in Next Elections

The leaders of the Party of Freedom and Justice, the Democratic Party and the People’s Part, Dragan Djilas, Zoran Lutovac and Vuk Jeremic respectively had agreed to run together in the next elections, Belgrade daily Nova reported in its Oct. 14 issue.

This agreement will be put to a vote before the membership of each of the parties, with decisions due by the end of October. Also, the party leaders Djilas, Lutovac and Jeremic should also agree on how they will distribute mandates after the elections

According to the daily, the initial proposal was to allocate 30 percent of the won mandates to three parties each, while the remainder would be distributed among minor opposition parties. However, according to the Nova, “the Djilas party expects that in accordance with the support each of the three parties enjoy among the voters, the Party of Freedom and Justice will receive double the proposed share of mandates.”

On the other hand, Serbian Movement Dveri leader Bosko Obradovic has said that he cannot understand Djilas’ idea for making a single opposition ticket without Dveri, as it would mean the restoration of the Democratic Party.

“If they want a ticket with candidates who were in the former regime, it is another thing and if so, it should be named properly: those who served in the former regime are joining forces to run under a single ticket, because they believe that what they were doing while in power was good. I, of course, have a totally opposite opinion,” Obradovic told the Oct. 14 issue of Belgrade weekly NIN.  

Djilas has recently said that Obradovic has disqualified himself from the opposition’s single ticket for taking part in (Serbian President Aleksandar) “Vucic’s chattering,” that is, Vucic’s meeting with Republika Srpska political representatives.
