Construction of Subway Kicks off in Belgrade

The construction of the Belgrade subway started at the Makisko Polje location on Nov. 22, with the building of infrastructure and a platform of the future terminal.

Belgrade Deputy Mayor Goran Vesic said that this was the capital's most important project in the 21st century and that by 2030 Belgrade would get two subway lines with a combined length of 42 kilometers and 43 stops, 223 kilometers of BG Train lines with 76 stops and 500 departures per day, as well as 42.6 kilometers of a new tram network, according to the official City of Belgrade website.

"The two subway lines will cost around 4.6 billion euros, the expansion of BG Train and new trams about 1.5 billion, and that equals roughly five annual budgets and so it is clear that we would not be able to finance such a project in a such a short time on our own," said Vesic, recalling that the government had backed the project.

In his words, this was a giant leap and the biggest step into the future of Belgrade in the 21st century. Vesic also announced that Serbia and Russia would sign an interstate agreement by the end of this year, on the reconstruction of the existing BG Train lines, the city and suburban railway, and on the purchase of new trams.
