In the last 24 hours, 27 people died of COVID-19 in Serbia, and the death toll of the epidemic now stands at 13,098, it was announced on Jan. 17.
According to the records of the Serbian Institute of Public Health, 29,443 samples were tested in the same time frame, 12,797 of which were found to be positive for the coronavirus that causes the disease. There are 2,478 patients currently hospitalized with COVID-19 in the country, 102 of whom require assisted ventilation, which means that three more patients were on ventilators than the previous day.
Since the outbreak, 7,663,963 people have been tested in Serbia and 1,449,192 were found to be positive for SARS-CoV-2.
Serbian Health Minister Zlatibor Loncar said on Jan. 17 that the health care system had sufficient capacity to treat COVID patients and that around 50 percent was currently available. He told Happy TV, however, that that capacity could be exceeded within a week, as the pandemic was unpredictable.
