Police have found several hundred migrants in the territory of Kikinda, Subotica and Sombor who will be taken to reception centers, the Ministry of Interior stated on Feb. 7.
Interior Minister Aleksandar Vulin and Commissioner for Refugees and Migration Vladimir Cucic early on Feb. 7 paid a visit to the police officers who were involved in the operation. Vulin said that the aim of those police operations was to ensure that the law was respected and that everyone was safe, but also to provide humane living conditions for migrants.
He went on to say that the objective of such operations was "primarily to rein in gangs of smugglers" and to send them "a clear message that they will be found out and arrested in Serbia." Vulin reiterated that Serbia would not be a parking lot for migrants.
He pointed out that Serbia respected the laws and took care of migrants in an organized and humane way, and that it had one of the most organized asylum systems in Europe. "Serbia expects everyone, be they our citizens or migrants, to abide by the law," he said and added that Serbia would fulfill its international obligations, but would also "take care of the everyday life of citizens, which will not be disrupted in any way."
