A professor at the University of Belgrade's Faculty of Political Sciences, Cedomir Cupic, has said that he has joined the team of opposition presidential candidate Zdravko Ponos because he believes it is the obligation of every citizen, especially an intellectual, to take a public stance.
"I took a stance by supporting Zdravko Ponos' candidacy, i.e. the United Serbia coalition. I think that coalition is the biggest hope where change is concerned. It is the group of parties that boycotted elections (in 2020) and showed a dose of responsibility," Cupic told the Nova newspaper.
Cupic, who is the member of Ponos' team in charge of corruption, said that the Serbian president had limited power, but could propose that the government and parliament enact a law.
"Our choice is not to make decisions but rather to advise him. As for corruption, it has become systemic here, we are seeing political corruption that has gotten into all systems - the economic, social and value [one]," he added.
Cupic also said that the most realistic option was for the opposition to win the election in Belgrade because the capital "showed it is dissatisfied" in the referendum on constitutional amendments in January.
