At 7 a.m. on June 2, workers of the Fiat Chrysler Automobiles Serbia plant in Kragujevac staged a protest at the factory’s front gate – a move Prime Minister Ana Brnabic stated was the result of “manipulations.”
In her June 2 statement, Brnabic explained that she had spoken with representatives of the Kragujevac workers and workers’ unions on Monday, May 30, and that it was unreasonable to expect the issues at hand to be resolved in just two days.
The prime minister further said that she would speak with representatives of electric car manufacturer Stellantis later in the day and seek an explanation as to why “they reneged on their agreement” with the government to temporarily halt discussing labor contracts with their employees.
Stellantis had promised to postpone contract discussions for ten days, until a final agreement could be reached, but then continued pressing employees to decide between working abroad or being laid off with benefits – in response to which workers staged the morning’s protest.
