German Chancellor Olaf Scholz is arriving on a brief visit to Belgrade in the afternoon on June 10, and the main topic of his meeting with Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic is expected to be Serbia's joining the EU sanctions against Russia, imposed because of the attack on Ukraine.
German Ambassador to Belgrade Thomas Schieb said ahead of the visit that the key message of the visit would be that Berlin considered Serbia and the other Western Balkan states and their European integration very important, but also that there was a need to demonstrate that the EU and the region "stand side by side" in the matter of Russia's attack on Ukraine.
Scholz is coming to Belgrade just five weeks after he met with Vucic in Berlin. Reviving the dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina is expected to be another important discussion topic.
He is arriving in Belgrade from Pristina, where he will meet only with Premier Albin Kurti, and after Belgrade he will go to Thessaloniki where he will join a working dinner as part of the South-East European Cooperation Process (SEECP) initiative.
On June 11, the German chancellor will visit North Macedonia and Bulgaria.
