Mark Martyniuk, the deputy chief of mission at the Ukrainian Embassy in Belgrade, has said that Kiev wants and is ready to buy arms from Serbia, but that Belgrade probably does not want to sell arms due to its military neutral status. “You know that Serbia has not been selling arms to Ukraine, but we see no obstacles,” Martyniuk told the July 19 issue of Belgrade daily Nova.

Speaking about a cargo plane, owned by a private Ukrainian company which had crashed in northern Greece en route to Bangladesh while carrying 11.5 tons of munitions produced in Serbia, Martyniuk said that according to his earlier information, it was “a mechanical failure,” adding that a full investigation was required.

Martyniuk reiterated Ukraine’s stand that Serbia should impose sanctions against Russia and that his country was expecting much more support from Belgrade in various domains, but he also extended gratitude for the reception of the Ukrainians who had to leave their homes.
