On Aug. 15, disgruntled farmers continued to block both routes from Pancevo to Belgrade while awaiting the outcome of the day’s scheduled talks with Prime Minister Ana Brnabic.
Protests also continued in Novi Sad, Subotica, Kragujevac and Lapovo.
The meeting with Brnabic at the government headquarters – the Ministry of Finance of Serbia Building in Belgrade – will be attended by representatives of the farmers, oil manufacturers, retail chains, the Serbian Chamber of Commerce as well as of the ministries of agriculture and finance.
The government has expressed its hope that the negotiations will yield a solution acceptable both to the farmers and to the state and retail sector, and which protects the interests of the general public as well.
The farmers have demanded that the producer’s price of sunflower be set at EUR700 per metric ton, that fuel taxes be waived for quantities below 100 liters per hectare, and that a limit be set for retail markups on sunflower oil.
In response to the farmers’ demands, the government has already removed the ban on the exportation of oil and offered producers EUR535, plus VAT, per metric ton of sunflower seed.
