PRIDE MARCH LED BY ORGANIZERS, PRIME MINISTER, OFFICIALS

On Aug. 29, Prime Minister Designate Ana Brnabic stated that the Serbian state does not wish to deny anyone their Constitutional rights but is concerned over the repercussions of hosting this year’s EuroPride.

The government’s decision to cancel EuroPride 2022, which had been scheduled to take place in Belgrade in September, is not binding but “rather a plea,” Brnabic said, adding that the previous administration – which she led as prime minister – “did not issue bans either.”

“It’s a plea rather than a statement like: ‘Do not congregate.’ [Such a gathering] is in keeping with the Constitution, but its repercussions for our country are another matter entirely. The question is what is currently possible and how can we maintain [internal] stability. I regret the situation, but this September is [shaping up to be] a perfect storm for us all. There are also foreign forces [at play] which are rejoicing in [our] situation,” the prime minister designate concluded.
