The upcoming census will probably show a decline in Serbia’s population to around 6.5 million, while in a few decades, the number of people is expected to be significantly below the figure registered after World War II, demographer Ivan Marinkovic has said.
“With external migrations included, estimates show that the number of citizens could now be below 6.5 million, while in the mid-21st century, it could be between 3.5 and four million. This figure is below the number of citizens registered after World War II, as in 1948, Serbia’s population was six million,” Marinkovic said.
According to Marinkovic, the difference between the number of people leaving and settling in Serbia on an annual basis is between 15,000 to 20,000, so a total drop in the number of citizens is expected to be around 700,000 compared to the previous population census.
He added that Serbia’s shrinking population was also due to a lower number of births as most women had been deciding to be child-free.
The last census in 2011 counted 7,186,862 people in Serbia.
