Serbia’s failure to align with the EU foreign policy was dangerous for the country’s interests and its future, the deputy leader of the opposition Freedom and Justice Party, Borko Stefanovic, said on Oct. 18, adding that he, as the chairman of the Parliament’s Committee on Foreign Affairs, would recommend imposition of sanctions against Russia.

“A session of the Foreign Affairs Committee will discuss the document which I will present and which seeks alignment of Serbia’s foreign policy with the EU as soon as possible, especially with respect to restrictive measures against Russia over its illegal military attack, aggression on a sovereign county and annexation of its territories, which is all at odds with the U.N. Charter,” Stefanovic said.

Stefanovic further said that Russia’s reaction to potential sanctions would not be positive, but added it was difficult for him to believe that Moscow would unilaterally terminate the agreement on import of natural gas or increase prices of fuels. “I am sure that the Russians would understand that Serbia wants to join the EU and that it is our future as well as that it is the sovereign right of every country,” Stefanovic noted.
