The protesting students of the University of Nis have called on the citizens to go to Novi Pazar in sign of support to their fellow colleagues in Serbia’s southwestern city. “Following terrible scenes of storming into the State University in Novi Pazar by thugs and police officers, and a brutal violation of the Law on Higher Education, guaranteeing the inviolability of the academic space, we call on Nis to raise its voice against violence and lawlessness,” the Nis students said.

According to the protesting students, the incident in Novi Pazar was not only an attack on students and professors, but a trial balloon floated to see whether students and citizens would turn a blind eye to such things. “They will try the same thing at other faculties. If we remain silent today, it will be too late tomorrow,” the students stated.

The Green-Left party has said that those who had thrown the students out of the University of Novi Pazar were the same people who had been attacking opposition aldermen across Serbia. “This regime is no longer deploying police officers, but thugs instead, because their goal is to have the law replaced by fear,” the party published on platform X.

The Serbia Center (SRCE) party has said that by saying that relevant bodies had entered the State University of Novi Pazar and established control without any problem, Parliament speaker Ana Brnabic has actually confirmed that masked thugs are considered by the regime of the Serbian Progressive Part as a relevant body. Such groups, according to the party, have been formed in all major cities in Serbia and have been operating with the assistance of the police, which the party described as concerning.

The Free Citizens Movement has said that the eviction of the protesting students from the University of Novi Pazar represents a direct attack on the autonomy of the university and violent suppression of the student protest. The party requests accountability of the university management, if they were involved or facilitated the presence of private security on the university premises, stressing that the Education Ministry must respond to protect academic institutions.
