Serbia’s electric power industry is facing much graver problems than have been made public by the country’s so-called political elite, with figures indicating a quite dire situation despite government assurances that everything is under control, said the oppositional Serbia Centre movement, headed by presidential runner-up Zdravko Ponos.

“In her official address, Prime Minister Ana Brnabic announced many billions-worth of investments into the power industry, as if a renaissance and betterment await us and the [Elektroprivreda Srbije power company] is not about to collapse. Minutes after assuming office, the minister in charge, Dubravka Djedovic, claimed that the price of power must go up, while –apparently best-informed – President Aleksandar Vucic has spoken [of said price increase] in terms of the exact percentages that can be expected,” the press release reads.

The movement further stated that, while the people remain ignorant of how the country’s publicly-owned power supply company is spending its money, Finance Minister Sinisa Mali has presented a rebalanced budget where billions of euros have been allocated to the domestic power industry.
