Barricades on main roads in North Kosovo remained up on Dec. 13, while it is still not possible to cross on foot administrative checkpoints in Jarinje and Brnjak.
State public broadcaster RTS has reported that the Serbs who have been protesting the arrest of former Kosovo police member Dejan Pantic are still gathered around barricades, while Kosovo police have blocked North Kosovo.
The Kosovo police arrested Pantic several days ago on suspicion of “terrorist attack on premises of the Central Election Commission of Kosovo” and the Kosovo police ahead of elections in four municipalities in North Kosovo. On Dec. 12, Pantic’s detention was extended to up to 30 days.
Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic has announced that on Dec. 15, the Serbian government will submit to the NATO-led international peacekeeping force in Kosovo (KFOR) an official request for the return of up to 1,000 Serbian police officers and soldiers to Kosovo in accordance with UN Security Council Resolution 1244.
Kosovo President Vjosa Osmani has meanwhile postponed elections in four municipalities in North Kosovo for April 23.
On Dec. 12, EU foreign ministers called on both sides to refrain from any form of violence or provocative actions. EU High Representative Josep Borrell has said that EU representative Miroslav Lajcak is scheduled to visit Belgrade and Pristina on Dec. 14 to present an updated peace proposal.
