According to the Jan. 4 edition of the Vecernje Novosti daily, representatives of the EU, U.S., France and Germany are scheduled to pay a visit to Belgrade following the Christmas holidays in an attempt to accelerate the resolution of the Kosovo question.
The Serbian capital will first be visited by EU Special Representative for the Belgrade-Pristina Dialogue Miroslav Lajcak and U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary for the Western Balkans Gabriel Escobar, the paper writes. The two will be accompanied by Emmanuel Bonne, the foreign policy advisor to the French president, and Jens Ploetner, an advisor to the German chancellor, after which other foreign officials might also visit Serbia.
Citing unnamed sources, the paper claims that the goal of these visits is to convince Serbia’s leadership to resume negotiations with Pristina based on the EU’s latest proposal, which was redrafted by France and Germany.
The Novosti adds that the visits are all set to take place before Feb. 24, which marks the one-year anniversary of the outbreak of the war in Ukraine – the informal deadline for Belgrade and Pristina to agree on at least the outline of a future treaty on normalizing relations.
