Nis is among 13 cities in Serbia in which the Agency for Protecting the Environment has established a high concentration of PM2.5 and PM10 particles and the concentration of these particles in the city over the past week has mostly been higher than allowed, a Jan. 5 statement said.
Last week, Nis set a new record for pollution since the beginning of the heating season. A measuring station measured at 8 p.m. on Dec. 29 a concentration of PM10 particles of 348.75 micrograms per cubic meter and 241.22 micrograms of PM2.5 particles. Somewhat lower concentrations, although still far above the allowed amount, were measured on Dec. 30 when the concentration of PM10 particles was 295 micrograms while the concentration of PM2.5 particles was 216.03 micrograms.
According to the opinion of experts the concentration of suspended PM10 particles and heavy metals (lead, arsenic, cadmium and nickel) is not supposed to exceed 50 micrograms per cubic meter for the air to be regarded as clean while the concentration of PM2.5 particles is not supposed to exceed 25 micrograms.
