Munib Mujagic, the head of the municipality of Sjenica, said on Jan. 19 that the level of the local Grabovica river “rose dramatically” overnight causing chaos in the town and endangering many people.

“The number of endangered households is very high. Entire neighborhoods and parts of the town have been covered by water. The schoolyards of the Technical High School and College Preparatory have been flooded, forcing us to cancel classes,” Mujagic told Prva TV.

The town mayor further said that local rescue teams are on the alert, that issues are being dealt with “immediately” and that numerous younger individuals have signed up as volunteers with the town’s crisis team.

Flooding caused both Sjenica and nearby Prijepolje to declare a state of emergency on Jan. 18, and has compromised the Sjenica-Novi Pazar highway in several locations.
