Kolubara Mining Complex (BETAPHOTO/Public relations sector EPS)
Late on Jan. 24, a landslide hit an excavator in Field E of the RB Kolubara mining and smelting complex. No one was injured in the accident and there was little damage to equipment.
Having surveyed the site, Mining and Energy Minister Dubravka Djedovic announced that the power supply to Lazarevac and the surrounding area will not be compromised.
Djedovic explained that the site’s substation is currently not in danger, although the situation needs to be monitored in case the threat level changes. Furthermore, said substation only powers the complex itself and not any of the settlements in the area, she stated, adding that “the depots contain enough coal to fuel the heat plant that supplies Lazarevac.”
The minister did express her concern over the fact RB Kolubara’s coal production has dropped 30 percent in the last two weeks, a situation she says will only be exacerbated by the latest accident.
In her opinion, efforts need to be made to increase the amount of coal stored in depots so that the country’s power supply does not suffer any disruptions.
