Serbian Ambassador to Turkey Zoran Markovic announced on Feb. 13 that all Serbian citizens have been removed from danger posed by the Kahramanmaras earthquake and are currently safe.

Speaking for Pink TV, Markovic explained that about two dozen people from Serbia had been in the Gaziantep area when the 7.8 magnitude quake hit southern Turkey and western Syria on Feb. 6. The Serbian visitors either fled to other, safe locations in Turkey or returned to Serbia, the ambassador explained.

“The situation remains the same. None of our citizens are on the lists of killed or injured,” Markovic stated. He added that it has been several days since anyone has called the embassy – either from Serbia or from Turkey – to ask for assistance for a Serbian citizen.

Quoting available official data, Markovic explained that the disaster claimed 29,605 lives across ten Turkish provinces and injured nearly 90,000 people. He stressed that the numbers are not final, and that rescue teams – including teams sent from Serbia – are still searching for survivors.

According to the latest media reports, the death toll in Turkey has reached 31,643.
