Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani on March 21 described Serbia as a country which had “the decisive role” in preserving stability in the Western Balkans, adding that it was also pivotal for resolving the migration issue.
“Serbia is a great country with a great tradition which has maintained an ancient partnership with Italy and it can have a decisive role, together with us, in guaranteeing stability in the area, which is also crucial for resolving the migration issue, because the higher level of stability, the fewer number of illegal migrations,” Tajani told a joint conference with Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic in Belgrade.
He also said that owing to engagement of [Serbian President Aleksandar] Vucic, the situation in the Balkans had been peaceful. “We have been cooperating continuously, I have always asked him not to make unilateral decisions and he has always responded very positively, he has proven to be a man of peace who always strives for a positive solution to the interest of his country and stability in the region,” he specified.
Tajami also said that Italy backed the region’s integration in the EU, which had been confirmed with Italy’s presence in all Western Balkan countries. “Italy wishes to be a champion in the Western Balkan, because it believes that the countries in the region are privileged associates and strategic partners,” Tajani stressed.
