State Officials Pay Respects to Belgrade's Liberators
Several ambassadors to Serbia have laid wreaths at the monument to the Liberators of Belgrade to mark the Victory Day.
Among others, the Polish, German, French, Ukrainian, U.S. and Czech ambassadors took part in the May 8 wreath-laying ceremony. The U.S. ambassador to Serbia, Christopher Hill, said that it’s important to remember “the fallen” of World War II, and that the day it ended was “a great day.”
“It is important to remember all the soldiers on the Eastern Front, the Soviet soldiers of different nationalities. Among the greatest, particularly during the liberation of Belgrade, were Ukrainians,” Ambassador Hill said, adding that everyone should remember the Ukrainian sacrifice in the past, and support the Ukrainians today, when “they are brutally attacked by their neighbors.”
The Ukrainian ambassador to Serbia, Volodymyr Tolkach, had said earlier that Ukraine commemorated all the victims of World War II (1939-1945) on the Day of Remembrance and Reconciliation, May 8. “It is very important to remember and respect the triumph of those who fought Nazism and defeat it,” the diplomat said.
