The Higher Court in Kraljevo confirmed an indictment against three police officers from Kosovo arrested by the authorities in Serbia earlier this month, ordering a release pending trial.

The court reported that after pretrial stages had been completed and the prosecutors charged the three police officers with a criminal offense of manufacturing, holding, carrying and trading in arms and explosive substances, a chamber of the Higher Court in Kraljevo confirmed the indictment and ruled to release them from custody.

The police officers, Rifat Zeka, Becir Sefi and Mustafa Semi, were arrested on June 14 and their first hearing before the court in Kraljevo took place on June 26. Initially, they had been ordered a 30-day detention.

Belgrade’s lawyer Gradimir Nalic, representing the three policemen, said they were released pending trial and that they would return to Kosovo.

The European Union (EU) and the United States asked Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic to release the police officers, who Belgrade claimed had been arrested in the territory of Serbia proper, whereas Pristina insisted they had been kidnapped in the north of Kosovo.
