The supercell storm that hit Serbia in the evening of July 19 did not cause any major damage to the country’s infrastructure, Minister of Construction, Transportation and Infrastructure Goran Vesic said on July 20.
Vesic told the RTS public service that both the Belgrade and Nis airports were closed due to the storm, but that the capital airfield re-opened soon after the weather settled. The aerodrome in Nis was shut down longer because winds tore the roof off an auxiliary flight control facility, but resumed operation in the morning of July 20.
Milos Milenkovic, the chief of Interior Ministry’s Emergency Situations Sector, also speaking for RTS, said that his service made 201 interventions throughout the country during the storm and saved 18 people.
In the capital, he said, firefighters conducted 34 interventions, 20 of which consisted of removing fallen trees from roads, but there was no need for evacuations or rescues.
