The U.S. has delivered 66 High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicles to Serbia, procured via a direct commercial contract with the U.S. company AM General.
According to a July 23 report by the Balkan Security Network, this is the first tranche of a total of 118 vehicles that were ordered. According to the Instagram channel of the U.S. embassy in Serbia, the vehicles are stationed in a barracks in Pancevo and will be used, among other things, in international peacekeeping missions.
These aren't just U.S. vehicles, this is a NATO standard. When you look at who the Army of Serbia is deployed with in peacekeeping missions -- its partners in Lebanon are Spain and Italy, and the U.S. in Sinai -- what we have in common is the NATO standard. Owning these vehicles allows Serbia to be part of any peacekeeping mission around the world, to respond swiftly and to be deployed side by side with its partners, the U.S. embassy said.
The statement added that this latest shipment would not only allow Serbia to be efficient in peacekeeping work worldwide, but would also be an excellent first step in achieving interoperability with the U.S. military. According to the Balkan Security Network's information, the first shipments of new Humvees began late in June via the Belgrade Airport as part of a purely commercial deal, unlike the first tranche, delivered some ten years ago, when the U.S. donated a number of these vehicles.
