Slavica Djukic Dejanovic: Life with Psychiatry and Politics

During its fall session, the Serbian National Assembly will be adopting amendments to educational legislation aimed at strengthening schools’ impact on shaping proper behavior as well as improving prevention and reaction efficiency in the case of school violence, Education Minister Slavica Djukic Dejanovic announced on Aug. 30.

“Among other things, these legal changes will also allow school conduct marks to be included in the calculation of a student’s first and second semester average as of second grade, [will allow] the maximum class size to be reduced to 28 students, and [will allow] the removal of a student from school for up to five days in the case of severe infractions on the student’s part,” the minister told the Vecernje Novosti daily.

Djukic Dejanovic added that her ministry has suggested that Sept. 1, which marks the beginning of the new school year, “be a day of dialogue between teachers and students, not only regarding the curriculum but also regarding emotions, values, human kindness, respect and the future.”
