The European food safety mechanism Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed (RASFF) has announced that fresh cucumbers from Serbia, intended for the Slovenian market, were rejected at the border, the Danas portal reported on Sept. 14.
According to the announcement on the web-site of RASFF, the produce has been found to contain the fungicide metalaxyl and the decision was made for the shipment to be destroyed. Although metalaxyl is a fungicide that has not been labeled as hazardous, the shipment contained a higher concentration than permitted.
The allowed concentration is 0.01 and the shipment contained 0.025 micrograms of pesticide residue per kilogram. A similar thing happened on Aug. 14, when Croatia reported that a shipment of peaches from Serbia was potentially hazardous.
Moreover, an elevated level of the carcinogenic compound acryl-amide was discovered at the Croatian border at the start of August, in the shipment of potato crisps made in Serbia.
