The president of North Macedonia, Stevo Pendarovski, stated in New York on Sept. 21 that the most urgent task of the U.N. Security Council was to “proactively engage” in ending the war in Ukraine and that, due to the blockade of that body, the issue of the permanent Security Council members’ veto should be thoroughly reconsidered.
“The only way for this goal to be accomplished is by diplomatic means and negotiations, based on respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine within its internationally recognized borders,” Pendarovski said during a debate on the preservation of international peace, his office has stated.
Pendarovski said the first step in ending the war in Ukraine should be an “immediate and unconditional ceasefire” and creation of an atmosphere for starting the negotiations. “During the entire process, the United Nations should establish a peace mission, with the main task of supervising the ceasefire and sending humanitarian aid to civilians,” Pendarovski said.
