Vucic Requests from the Quint that KFOR Takes Charge of Security in North Kosovo

Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic on Sept. 26 requested from the ambassadors of the Quint countries - the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, and Italy, and the EU Delegation to Serbia that KFOR took charge of all security issues in North Kosovo instead of the police of [Kosovo Premier] Allbin Kurti.

“In one of the most difficult moments for Serbia, I had an important meeting with the ambassadors of the Quint. I reiterated Serbia’s position on the latest developments in Kosovo and Metohija and requested that KFOR took care of all security issues in North Kosovo instead of Kurti’s police,” Vucic wrote on Instagram after the meeting in Belgrade.

Vucic also asked why the Kosovo police had not allowed EULEX to be present during the operation in North Kosovo.

After the meeting, US Ambassador to Serbia Christopher Hill described the escalation of violence in the settlement of Banjska in North Kosovo as “a tragic event,” adding that further steps were being considered. He declined to talk about the issues discussed at the meeting with Vucic.

“We all have to condemn the killing of a member of the Kosovo police and we always regret loss of life, but we have to proceed with the political process. Process on how to encourage the dialogue are underway,” Ambassador Hill said. He added that in the coming days and weeks, the diplomatic process had to be “strengthened” and many discussions held “on which steps need to be taken.”
