Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti said on Oct. 13 that given Serbia’s tendencies towards destabilization, dialogue could not go on normally.
Speaking at a joint press conference with U.S. senators Jeanne Shaheen and Peter Welch, Kurti said that he had shared with the two senators the latest findings related to a Sept. 24 attack in the northern Kosovo village of Banjska, suggesting “Serbia’s involvement.” The Kosovo prime minister also said that evidence existed that the attack was part of a broader plan to annex the north of Kosovo through coordinated attacks on 37 locations.
Kurti added that intelligence institutions had noted that there was a growing risk of “attacks from Serbia.”
“The attempts at destabilization must be stopped now. The EU-mediated dialogue cannot continue, because virtually nothing has happened. The chapter on the dialogue for normalizing relations should also take into account Serbia’s aggressive actions and efforts to annex Kosovo. Steps need to be taken to offer the dialogue another chance of success. It has never been so important that Serbia stops saying it will never recognize Kosovo’s independence,” Kurti said.
U.S. Senator Shaheen reiterated that the region needed stability and peace at all cost. “The U.S. is with you,” she said.
