The State Electoral Commission’s regulations for the upcoming snap election – which preclude ticket submitters from replacing their electoral monitors – is aimed at sabotaging the opposition, MP Radomir Lazovic of the Green-Left Front said on Nov. 1.

A total of 79 members of parliament led by the Green-Left Front have filed an initiative to determine the legality and constitutionality of said electoral regulations.

“The key issue is electoral monitoring. The State Electoral Commission removed the option of replacing the monitors parties have proposed even in the case of death or illness,” Lazovic told a news conference at the Parliament building. He also called on “all citizens. . . to participate in the election campaign and in monitoring the upcoming elections.”

Green-Left Front MP Jelena Jerinic addressed the media as well, maintaining that the incumbent Serbian Progressive Party is using “any and all means to manipulate the elections.” “These electoral regulations were passed last week,” Jerinic said and expressed her hopes that the Constitutional Court will “reach a timely decision” in response to the initiative, rather than wait for the elections to pass. She added that the group behind the petition has also requested “temporary measures for preventing the State Electoral Commission from implementing these regulations.”
