Belgrade Election No Earlier than April 21, No Later than May 26

The 30-day clock on calling a new election in Belgrade started on March 3, when the legal deadline to inaugurate the new city assembly expired.

No less than 45 and no more than 60 days may pass from the day that the local election is called to voting day, meaning that the election can take place on April 21 at the earliest and May 26 at the latest.

If the ruling majority opts to call the vote as early as possible, it would have to proceed with the inauguration of the Serbian parliament as quickly as possible -- in the next two to three days and pick a speaker to call the vote for April 21.

If the new speaker is picked on March 12, as some media outlets close to the government have already announced, and if the speaker calls the election immediately, the earliest possible day for the election would be April 28 -- the Sunday before the Labor Day and Easter holidays. If the election of the parliament speaker is delayed, or the speaker does not call elections in the capital immediately after taking office but only in early April, an interim body may continue to run the city until the end of May.
