Osmani: North Macedonia Co-Sponsors Resolution on Srebrenica to be Supported by Serbia, too

North Macedonia’s Foreign Minister Bujar Osmani has said on April 15 that North Macedonia was one of the co-sponsors of a draft U.N. Resolution on genocide in Srebrenica to be voted on by the U.N. General Assembly on May 2, urging Serbia’s support to the document. 

“Together with Germany, the United States and other countries, North Macedonia co-sponsored a draft U.N. resolution that declares July 11 the International Day of Reflection and Remembrance of the 1995 Srebrenica Genocide, which will be honored every year,” Osmani said at a press conference.

The minister underlined that North Macedonia, as one of the co-sponsors, would support and vote in favor of the new resolution, urging all U.N. member states, Serbia in particular, to do the same, “lest it should happen again.”

“I believe it is very important for Serbia to vote in favor of the resolution, so that the facts could be recognized and promoted, as all the decisions made by international courts and bodies have confirmed that genocide did happen in Srebrenica. As long as its denied and not recognized, it may likely happen again,” Osmani has cautioned.

North Macedonia’s foreign minister explained that his country condemned the genocide, and wanted it to be commemorated, adding that he did not think that it could aggravate a relationship with any country.
