Serbia, together with 16 other countries, has called for the immediate release of the hostages held in Gaza, emphasizing that this would help reach a ceasefire and enable the delivery of humanitarian aid.

“We are calling for the immediate release of all the hostages Hamas has been holding in Gaza for over 200 days. Among them are citizens of our own countries. The fate of the hostages and of the civilian population of Gaza, who are protected by international law, is causing concern in the international community,” reads the joint statement issued by the Serbian President’s Office on April 25.

The text goes on to insist that “an agreement on releasing the hostages would result in an a prompt and extended ceasefire in Gaza, which would enable the delivery of necessary humanitarian aid throughout Gaza and lead to a reliable end of hostilities,” while “the people of Gaza could return to their homes and land after shelter and humanitarian aid have been secured.”

“We strongly support the current mediation efforts in bringing our people home. We again call on Hamas to release the hostages and allow us to end this crisis, so that we can jointly focus our energies on establishing peace and stability in the region,” says the document, signed by Argentina, Austria, Brazil, Bulgaria, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Hungary, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Serbia, Spain, Thailand, the United Kingdom and the United States of America.
