Serbian Parliamentary Delegation Urges NATO Not to Grant Kosovo Associate Member Status

A delegation of the Serbian parliament that took part in the spring session of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly in Sofia on May 25 delivered a letter urging the Assembly not to grant the Kosovo Assembly associate member status.

The delegation met with the head of the U.S. delegation to the NATO Parliamentary Assembly, Michael Turner, who received Serbian Speaker Ana Brnabic's letter urging the members of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly not to adopt a decision awarding the Kosovo Assembly associate member status, the press service of the Serbian parliament said in a press release.

This status would represent a reward for Pristina's behavior and Pristina is doing everything in its power to obstruct dialogue and not meet its obligations from the Brussels Agreement, the Serbian parliament's press release reads. The letter "calls particular attention to the pervasive violence and open systemic, systematic and continued discrimination against Serbs in Kosovo and Metohija, as evidenced by the fact that more than 15 percent of the Serb population left Kosovo last year alone," the press release read.

The NATO Parliamentary Assembly session in Sofia is taking place from May 24 to 27, and will consider Kosovo's request for associate member status in the organization.
