Vukasin Obradovic, a journalist, said on Sept. 30, that Serbia's local media that are not under government control "can barely survive," warning that they needed support, as well as help from the citizens, who, as he put it, "need to understand that without free media there will be no free citizens either."
In an interview published on the Facebook page of Kragujevac-based "Glas Sumadije" portal, Obradovic said that the difficult economic situation had pushed the media and journalists to "apathy," which was "not difficult to understand, as they are merely trying to survive one day at a time."
"The citizens living upcountry suffer most from the situation in the media community, as they have no access to objective information, breaking news and are even left without the most basic communal reports from their communities," Obradovic said.
"It is obvious that the authorities do not want to ensure a level playing field for the entire media community. Instead, they want to destroy the few media that are not under their full control," the journalist has warned.
