The director of the Secretariat of the Energy Community (EC), Janez Kopac, stated on Jan. 17 that, according to data from 2018, gas emissions in the "Nikola Tesla" thermal power plants in Obrenovac were 4.7 times higher than planned, and 14 times higher in Kostolac.

He told BETA that, compared with the latest draft National Emission Reduction Plan (NERP), which the EC's secretariat has gained insight into, the biggest problem was sulfur-dioxide.

The EC's secretariat launched the preliminary procedure against Serbia on Jan. 16, because of the incomplete implementation of the Directive on large combustion plants, about adhering to certain limits for emissions of harmful gases.

"There are 16 large combustion plants in Serbia, and their emissions exceed the allowed standards in the 'Nikola Tesla' A and B and Kostolac A and B thermal power plants, in the thermal power plant-heating plant (TE-TO) Novi Sad, the energy plant in Pancevo and in the atmospheric distillation plant of the Serbian Oil Industry (NIS)," Kopac stated.

Asked about whether he saw the reply of the Serbian Ministry for Mining and Energy, about them taking all the measures defined in NERP, Kopac replied that the plan was never adopted.

The EC is the organization consisting of EU members and nine contractual parties – Georgia, Moldova, Ukraine and the partner countries in the Western Balkans.
