Four people have died of COVID-19 in Serbia in the last 24 hours, which raises the death toll of the epidemic to date to 7,167, an Aug. 15 post on the covid19.rs website said.

There were 817 newly infected out of 7,921 samples tested. Hospital care is being provided for 856 COVID patients, 27 of whom require assisted ventilation.

Verica Jovanovic, director of the Dr Milan Jovanovic Batut Institute of Public Health, said on Aug. 14 that Serbia had entered a "new wave" of COVID, adding that the virus was present globally and that a surge in new infections began in mid-July.

Jovanovic told the Serbian Broadcasting Corporation that the largest numbers of infected individuals were in big cities, where migration was highest and where preventive measures were being abandoned.
