The newly-appointed Indian ambassador to Serbia, Sanjiv Kohli, raised the tricolor at the Embassy of India on Aug. 15 to mark the 75th anniversary of the country's independence.

The Embassy said in a release that, in 1947, India gained independence from the British, who had first come to India for the purpose of trading and later occupied the country. Its struggle for independence consisted of a series of historic events with the ultimate goal of ending British rule in India.

The movement lasted between 1857 to 1947. Gandhi and many other freedom fighters left their stamp on the independence movement in India.

The celebrations were formally launched by Prime Minister Modi on March 12, 2021 at Sabarmati Ashram, in Gujarat, beginning a 75-week countdown to the actual 75th anniversary of independence on Aug. 15, 2023.

The embassy in Belgrade has organized a photo exhibition portraying India's freedom fighters, as well as an exhibition of Indian handicrafts. The anniversary is celebrated across India with numerous ceremonies, parades and cultural events.
