In the wake of Pristina’s announcement that Kosovo will apply for membership in the Council of Europe, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said in Brussels in the evening of May 11 that Belgrade will continue fighting to see the recognition of Kosovo’s unilaterally declared independence revoked.

Following an informal dinner for Western Balkan leaders hosted by EU High Representative Josep Borrell, Vucic told the media that Kosovo’s Foreign Minister Donika Gervalla confirmed that the territory would apply for membership in the EC on May 12.

Vucic further told the press conference that he had immediately responded to Gervalla’s announcement by recalling that such a move by Pristina represents “not only a breach of international law but also of certain agreements,” from U.N. Security Council Resolution 1244 to the Washington Agreement.

“But they will not give up,” Vucic explained, adding that Gervalla insisted that “in 2010, the International Court of Justice confirmed that they are an independent state.” The Serbian president also stated that all the European officials with whom he met reiterated that Serbia should join the sanctions against Russia.

During the dinner, Borrell reminded his guests that aligning with the Common Foreign and Security Policy is a central element of the European path. The main topics of discussion were the global and regional repercussions of Russia’s war against Ukraine and its people – which the Union maintains is both illegal and unprovoked. Specifically discussed was how the Union and its Western Balkan partners could collectively address the negative impact the conflict has had on the prices of food and fuels, as well as what could be done to promote regional and global stability, it was said in a statement issued by the European External Action Service.
