On May 12 Kosovo officially filed a request for full membership in the Council of Europe which has been forwarded to the organization's Committee of Ministers for further processing.

We confirm that we received a request for membership from Kosovo and have forwarded it to the Committee of Ministers in accordance with the Council of Europe's statute, BETA was told by the Council of Europe's press service. The application for Kosovo membership in the Council was personally presented in Strasbourg on May 12 by Kosovo Foreign Minister Donika Gervalla-Schwarz, her office said in a statement.

The Kosovo cabinet previously adopted the initiative at an online session and charged the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Diaspora to conduct all procedures connected to membership on the basis of existing legislation.

In a statement, the Kosovo cabinet said that the Council of Europe was the oldest inter-governmental organization in Europe whose purpose was to secure cooperation and unity in the area of human rights, democracy and the rule of law "which are guaranteed by the Kosovo constitution."

According to past experiences and procedure it could take several years before Kosovo becomes a member of the Council of Europe.
