The European Union, its members and institutions urge Pristina and Belgrade to "act with restraint and not resort to unilateral moves and messages that only increase tension," the spokesman of the European Commission (EC), Peter Stano, stated in Brussels on May 12, commenting on Pristina's application for membership in the Council of Europe.

Asked to comment on Serbia's announcement that it would harshly respond to this move of Pristina, Stano said that the EU was not a member of the Council of Europe and that he was not able to comment.

Stano added that the EU only expected the two sides to do everything in order to solve all issues through dialogue, mediated by the Union, and sign the comprehensive legally binding agreement on the normalization of their relations.
