Human Rights in Serbia Becoming a Privilege

Human rights in Serbia were more and more becoming a privilege, while members of the LGBT community needed more political support to exercise and protect their rights, said participants of a conference titled “More than a march – human rights in Serbia in the light of EuroPride,” held on Sept. 28.

The Lawyers’ Committee for Human Rights (YUCOM) president, Katarina Golubovic, said it was the time to adopt regulations on the rights of the LGBT community and strengthen their protection, noting that the political elite held a major responsibility. “The responsibility of the political elite which has been in power for years now is to change the opinion of citizens with their messages and prepare citizens for adoption of these regulations,” Golubovic stressed.

The project manager at the European Movement in Serbia, Zorana Milovanovic, said that a state where someone as a member of a majority believed they had the right to decide about the rights of a minority could not be considered democratic. Milovanovic also said that a false picture had been created that the LGBT community members enjoyed more rights than they actually did, because the Serbian prime minister “has been enjoying her own rights out of institutions, she has been using political power and political function where she can exercise what most of the LGBT population cannot.”
