The Social Democratic Party of Serbia announced on April 2 that they supported the initiative for opening political dialogue with President Aleksandar Vucic about elections and Serbia’s foreign policy course.
“This is perhaps the last moment to reduce tension in the society through democratic debate and go back to solving disputes institutionally,” the Party declared in the statement. They emphasized that all political crises led in two directions – either toward further radicalization, or toward resolution at elections.
“However, elections held in such a polarized, infuriated and tense atmosphere would not bring about the sorely needed normalization in the society. Elections without a minimum of trust are not a solution, but a new imminent problem,” the Party stated. They went on to say that an agreement on elections called for a minimum of political responsibility of all actors, in power and in opposition alike.
“We must make the electoral process such that we all see it as the path to solving the crisis, the results of which we would all recognize, and not make it a trigger for more destabilization,” the Social Democrats stated. As for foreign policy, the Party said that dialogue was important for the preservation of peace and stability, but that, at the same time, one had to be on the right side of history.
