According to the latest issue of the Vreme weekly, Belgrade Mayor Aleksandar Sapic broke the law by failing to report his 2018 purchase of an 820,000-euro villa in Trieste, Italy, to Serbia’s Anti-Corruption Agency.
The article – penned by Vreme journalists and the Balkan Investigative Reporting Network (BIRN) – further says that Sapic’s purchase contract indicates his attempt to claim tax reliefs as a Trieste resident despite living in Belgrade and working as mayor of New Belgrade at the time.
Italian public records list Sapic as the owner of four pieces of real estate, including a gated 399-square-meter villa with 13 rooms. Reporters from Trieste’s Il Piccolo daily attempted to view the residence but were unable to gain access to the estate.
The second piece of real estate attributed to Sapic is a 127-square-meter garage, the third is an access road, while the Belgrade mayor is also listed as one of the 30 co-owners of a 6,200-square-meter forest.
“None of these entries from the Italian cadaster can be found in the registry of the domestic Anti-Corruption Agency. The last report Sapic submitted to the Agency, on July 19, 2022, states that, in terms of real estate, he owns only two residential units, yet the size of neither corresponds to the square meterage in Trieste,” Vreme writes.
The article further recalls that Sapic also failed to report his recently legalized home in New Belgrade’s Bezanijska Kosa neighborhood.
