Farmers Sign Agreement with Government (BETAPHOTO/VLADA SRBIJE/SLOBODAN MILJEVIC)

After five days of protests in which they set up tractor blockades on routes throughout the country,

Serbia’s farmers signed an agreement with the government on May 22 – their most important win being increased subsidies per hectare of farmed land.

On behalf of seven associations and their leader – the Association for the Survival of the Farmers of Serbia, which staged the protests – the agreement was signed by Mile Slankamenac and Vladimir Visic, and took effect immediately.

According to the deal, farmers will receive RSD9,000 more in subsidies, totaling RSD18,000 per hectare of land, for up to 20 hectares per household. The producer price of milk has been raised from 15 to 19 dinars per liter, while the subsidy per cow has been increase from RSD30,000 to RSD40,000.

During the negotiations, Prime Minister Ana Brnabic also promised the farmers that a RSD300 per kilogram import levy would be introduced on semi-hard cheese and that the land drainage tax would be reduced by 50 percent this year, and completely abolished as of 2024.
