Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto stated on March 7 that, during its upcoming presidency of the European Union, his country would focus on accelerating the Union’s enlargement and suppressing illegal migration.

Speaking at a news conference in Budapest with the leader of the Alliance of Vojvodina Hungarians, Balint Pastor, Szijjarto said that Hungary had “always stood alongside Serbia in matters of EU enlargement and it wants it to become a member of the Union as soon as possible, which would benefit the Vojvodina Hungarians.”

According to Szijjarto, relations between Hungary and Serbia are at a historic high, because ethnic Hungarians outside Hungary represent a resource for cooperating with neighboring countries, stated the Foreign Ministry of Hungary, as conveyed by the Hungarian media.

“This might perhaps sound like an overused phrase, but we have worked hard on being able to say, which we now are, that relations and cooperation between Hungary and Serbia are the best they have ever been in history,” Szijjarto said.
