A candidate of the “I Choose Belgrade” coalition for mayor, Dobrica Veselinovic, stated on May 9 that there would be no fair and free elections for as long as the Serbian Progressive Party is in power and that the differences with the part of the opposition that will not run in the June 2 elections only existed regarding the current tactic in the fight against the regime.

“The authorities use all methods of abuse, from the level of local communities, city and state resources to working with criminal groups. In those circumstances, we choose to fight. Our forefathers fought the numerically superior armies, if you like to use military terms. Or, you can see the examples of great opposition victories in Istanbul, Budapest, in Poland… in the past several months in conditions of limited democracy,” Veselinovic said in an interview to the NIN weekly.

He said that the situation in Belgrade under the Progressives’ rule was “unbearable” and called on the citizens to vote in the elections. “That is the only way for us to determine what future and what cities we will live in,” Veselinovic stated, adding that, for him, giving up the fight and not voting in the elections was a bad solution.
