The Bureau for Social Research (BIRODI) suggested to newly formed city assemblies on June 26 that they should not fear citizens with integrity, but rather form independent anti-corruption bodies under local anti-corruption plans.
The organization believes that the move would not only restart the fight against corruption, but also unblock Serbia’s EU accession process, unimaginable without anti-corruption measures.
Out of 28 cities, 16 do not have anti-corruption bodies, although all local governments were obligated to adopt local anti-corruption plans and form independent anti-corruption bodies composed of citizens with integrity, BIRODI noted, citing data from the Agency for the Prevention of Corruption in the first quarter of 2024.
The organization underlined that in that way factories of integrity would be created in Serbian cities, without which sustainable socio-economic development would be impossible locally and nationally.
