On July 19 in Belgrade, Germany’s Chancellor Olaf Scholz will be meeting with Serbia’s President Aleksandar Vucic for a Critical Raw Materials Summit which will entail the signing of a memorandum of understanding between Serbia and the EU Commission regarding a strategic partnership over raw materials, battery production chains and electric vehicles.

The day will begin with a morning sit-down between the two heads of state, focused on bilateral, but also international and European policy topics. The subsequent Summit will include EU Commission Vice President Maros Sefcovic.

In late May, Sefcovic announced the imminent signing of a lithium deal with Serbia, explaining that talks were underway to remove the last legal obstacles to forging a trade partnership between Serbia and the EU regarding supplying lithium from the Jadar River Valley.

Previously, on Sept. 22, 2023, Serbia and the EU signed a letter of intent regarding said raw materials and batteries partnership.
